Founded in 2020 as a grassroots collaboration of local initiatives across the state, the Florida Rights of Nature Network (FRONN) has worked in charter counties to protect nature's rights, people's rights to healthy ecosystems, and Home Rule.
That year, Orange County became the largest jurisdiction in the nation to pass a rights of nature law, and in 2021, using this new legal protection, an Orange County citizen initiated the nation’s first rights of nature enforcement case to prevent the destruction of wetlands. This case is ongoing.
Also in 2021, FRONN supported efforts to place a Right to Clean Water Constitutional Amendment on the 2022 state ballot. Similar to the Orange County law, it would have recognized the rights of waterways throughout the state and every citizen’s right to clean water. That effort, during the COVID-19 pandemic, was unsuccessful.
Currently, FRONN supports a Right to Clean Water initiative in Titusville, and a Right to Clean and Healthy Waterways Constitutional Amendment for 2024.
